Educator Well-Being Series, Featuring Ricky Robertson

Ricky RobertsonFREE Series for CASE Members
Educators work within a system built to burn us out. We work in a highly demanding and under-resourced field in which it is difficult to sustain our personal well-being and professional efficacy. Chronic stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout can negatively impact our job performance, the health of our relationships, and our own physical and mental well-being. In this series, Ricky Robertson will facilitate personal and professional learning in which participants will learn to: identify the signs and symptoms of chronic stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout; assess our levels of burnout; engage in practices that foster our well-being and resilience; and discuss the importance of school and district-wide practices that support educator well-being, retention, and efficacy.

All Sessions are from 1:00-2:30 (CT)
June 20 - When Stress Becomes Contagious: In 2017, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence & The New Teacher Center surveyed over 7,000 teachers about their emotional well-being. The most common emotions reported by teachers were frustratedoverwhelmed, and stressed (Bracket et al 2018). Chronic stress, as well as compassion fatigue and burnout negatively impact our ability to support students. Research has also shown that symptoms of stress can become contagious in schools and classrooms, impacting the school culture in addition to student and staff mental health. In this session, participants will learn to identify the symptoms of chronic stress, compassion fatigue, and the stages of burnout. Once we can name these challenges, we can tame them.

July 11 - Putting Your Oxygen Mask on FirstIn this session, participants will complete an assessment to determine their level of burnout. We will then explore self-care as a relationship we cultivate with ourselves rooted in kindness, gentleness, compassion, and respect. When we view self-care this way, we understand that self-care is as much about alleviating stress as it is about establishing healthy boundaries. We will also discuss research-based bitesize resiliency practices that can be done in minutes and are proven to reduce the symptoms of burnout and foster healthy resilience.

July 25 - Psychological Safety Among TeamsWhen educators are subjected to highly stressful work environments unhealthy workplace behaviors can take root. Isolation, workplace “cliques,” gossip, scapegoating, and workplace bullying behaviors can create socially and emotionally unsafe work environments that impede effective collaboration. In this session, we will explore key components and best practices to foster psychological safety among educators that facilitate collective efficacy.

August 8 - Collective Care is Essential:  Self-care is important but not enough. Ricky has found that educators are the most effective at improving student outcomes when they feel supported and valued. In this final session, Ricky will guide participants in exploring case studies that show how schools and districts can develop and implement practices that foster educator well-being, recruitment, retention, and success.

CASE is proud to partner with CAST (Helping educators and organizations apply insights from the learning sciences and leading-edge practices to education design and implementation) on a webinar series featuring Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Webinar #1: UDL & Special Education (Free to CASE and Non-CASE Members)
February 26, 2024; 2 pm (CST)  Webinar Recording
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that supports educators in designing learning experiences that are accessible and honor and build the agency of ALL students. This webinar invites participants to consider how special education supports and services support students with disabilities in universally-designed environments.

Webinar #2: UDL & MTSS (Free to CASE Members; $50 for Non-CASE Members)
March 25, 2024, 2 pm (CST)
It is commonly said that "UDL is good Tier 1 instruction," but UDL is also an important framework for designing instruction in Tier 2 & 3. All learning needs to be accessible, and all learning should facilitate students' becoming more expert at the art of learning itself. This webinar invites participants to think about the relationship between UDL and MTSS.

Webinar #3: UDL & Executive Function (Free to CASE Members; $50 for Non-CASE Members)
April 29, 2024, 2 pm (CST)
: Most learning experiences require students to use executive function skills to set goals, make a plan, and manage the attention needed to reach those goals. Educators who understand UDL proactively build supportive executive function options into lesson designs. This webinar invites participants to consider how embedded executive function options can support students with disabilities and the educators responsible for their learning.
